Life and register readings
The life of Süleyman Efendi began in Bosna in 1845 (AH 1261). The schooling was at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi). Süleyman began work in 1875/76, at about 30, on a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1875/76, names Süleyman as Duhan tahrir memuru mülazımı, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1878 to 1884. Next came Preveza (Preveze) from 1884 to 1887. Alongside, the lists for 1886/87 give a second post, in a post with no place named as a customs official (Rüsumat Memuru), with a rise to Rüsumat Memuru.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1875/76, when 28 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, six years of salary come to 18,360 kuruş, 60 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1886/87.
