Mehmed Said Efendi

Mehmed Said Efendi was born in Varna in 1832/33 (AH 1248); the father was a tradesman (esnaf). At about 28, in 1860/61, Mehmed Said began work in Tulcea (Tulça), on a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1864/65, names Mehmed Said as Beyoğlu Telgraf Merkezi muharrerat muvassalı, with no place. Alongside, the lists for 1871 to 1878 give a second post, in Varna as Telgraf Merkezi serçavuşu. Alongside, the lists for 1878 to 1880 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Telgraf ve Posta Merkezi çavuşu. The annual lists then follow Mehmed Said to Trabzon from 1880 to 1889. Alongside, the lists for 1888 to 1892 give a second post, in a post with no place named as İzin. Alongside, the lists for 1891 to 1898 give a second post, in Şarköy as Telgraf ve Posta Merkezi çavuşu. Alongside, the lists for 1897 to 1905 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Eşya ambarı sevk memuru. Entries spanning 42 years are rare, reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 8,239 officials.

The salary went from 240 kuruş a month in 1864/65 to 620 in 1871/72, the peak, in Varna, when two in three paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
