Life and register readings
Mehmet Nazmi Efendi was born in Sivas in 1839/40 (AH 1255). At about 18, in 1857/58, Mehmet Nazmi began work in Istanbul, on a first salary of 10 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1857/58, with Mehmet Nazmi as Muhasebe kalemi kâtibi and no place named. The lists have no entry for 1859 to 1861. Mehmet Nazmi then moved to Kibris, Erzurum and Diyarbakır from 1869 to 1875, with a rise to registry clerk (Mukayyit) in 1874/75. For 1872 to 1874 the lists have no entry. The last entries, from 1875 to 1890, name Mehmet Nazmi as Muhasebe kalemi memuru, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1884 to 1889.
Pay rose from 10 kuruş a month in 1857/58 to a peak of 2,500 in 1878, when 92 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 2,000 kuruş. Over 19 years the salaries add up to 154,200 kuruş, 1.6 times what an official on the median salary earned. The peak was 250 times the first salary, a rise matched by 17 of the 2,724 officials paid for ten years or more. The final annual entry is for 1889/90.
