Life and register readings
Yanko Asimakopolo Efendi was born in Bursa in 1861/62 (AH 1278) into the Hristiyan community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Work began in 1878, at about 16. The first annual entry, for 1878, places Yanko Asimakopolo in Beyoğlu as Mulazemet. The lists have no entry for 1878 to 1881. Next came Beirut in 1881/82. At the same time, from 1881 to 1888, the lists also place Yanko Asimakopolo in Beyoğlu as merkezi muhâberat-ı ecnebiyye me'muriyeti. For 1888 to 1896 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1887/88 give a second post, in Misir as telgraf merkezi muhaberat-ı ecnebiyye me'muriyeti. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1881/82 and Vefat (death) for 1896/97. The posts lie on three continents, Africa, Asia and Europe, as for only 37 of the 6,605 officials with a place of service.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to 1,250 in 1887/88, the peak, in Misir, when 84 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1896/97.
