Life and register readings

İsmail Kemal Efendi was born in Sivas in 1846/47 (AH 1263); the father's occupation was "Niksar Kazası aşar ihale memuru". Work began in 1865/66, at about 18. The first annual entry, for 1865/66, names İsmail Kemal as muhasebe stajyeri, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1866 to 1871 and 1872 to 1878. İsmail Kemal then moved to Yıldızeli (Yenihan), Şebinkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Şarki) and Koyulhisar from 1880 to 1885. Alongside, the lists for 1884 to 1891 give a second post, in a post with no place named as aşar kâtibi (muvakkat). For 1886 to 1890 and 1891 to 1897 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1890/91 give a second post, in Zile as nüfus memuru. Next came Nablus from 1897 to 1908. The last entry, for 1909/10, names İsmail Kemal as mazuliyet maaşı (Tekaüt), with no place. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 3 per cent of the 8,239 officials have entries spanning 46 years or more.

Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1878 to a peak of 500 in 1897/98, in Nablus, when 56 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 20 years of salary come to 97,680 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1909/10.
