Life and register readings
The life of Ömer Lütfi Efendi began in Tokat in 1834/35 (AH 1250). Ömer Lütfi studied at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi). Work began in 1876/77, at about 42, on a first salary of 120 kuruş. Few began so late; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known started at 42 or older. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, names Ömer Lütfi as Telgraf Mektebi Birinci Sınıf, with no place. The annual lists then follow Ömer Lütfi to Shumen (Şumnu) from 1877 to 1878, then İncesu from 1879 to 1885. Ömer Lütfi then moved to Boğazlıyan in 1885/86, then a post with no place named from 1889 to 1896. For 1886 to 1889 the lists have no entry. The last posts were in Struga (Ustruga) from 1896 to 1903, first as Nahiye Muduru, from 1902/03 as Nahiye Müdürü (Azil).
Pay rose from 120 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 800 in 1879/80, in İncesu, when three in four paid officials earned less. In all, 24 years of salary come to 173,040 kuruş, 1.5 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
