Life and register readings
Saferyan Merkar Efendi was born in Harput in 1854/55 (AH 1271) into the Hristiyan community. At about 36, in 1890/91, Saferyan Merkar began work in Istanbul, on a first salary of 300 kuruş. Of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 5 per cent started at 36 or older. Both annual entries, for 1890/91 and 1891/92, place Saferyan Merkar in Istanbul as İstanbul polisi sekizinci bölük beşinci çavuşunun beşinci neferi. The lists give Vefat (death) for 1896/97 instead of a title.
