Life and register readings
Mehmed Emin Yümni Efendi was born in Sulaymaniyah (Süleymaniye) in 1845 (AH 1261). Work began in Sulaymaniyah in 1865/66, at about 20, on a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1865/66, with Mehmed Emin Yümni as Tomruk kâtipliği in Sulaymaniyah, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1867/68. At the same time, from 1867 to 1875, the lists also place Mehmed Emin Yümni in Istanbul as Maliye Nezareti Masarifat Dairesi Evrak-ı Atika Odası memurluğu. Alongside, the lists for 1874/75 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Hoy şehbenderliği. The annual lists then follow Mehmed Emin Yümni to Şebinkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Şarki) from 1878 to 1882, then a post with no place named from 1882 to 1902. Alongside, the lists for 1901/02 give a second post, in Sulina as Sünne başşehbenderliği. Sulina, about 1,700 km from Sulaymaniyah, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,339 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to a peak of 2,300 in 1901/02, in Sulina, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 15 years the salaries add up to 261,600 kuruş, 3.6 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1901/02.
