Mehmed Nuri Efendi

The life of Mehmed Nuri Efendi began in Harput in 1839/40 (AH 1255); the father's occupation was "Kaza kaymakamı". At about 16, in 1855/56, Mehmed Nuri began work in Harput. The annual lists begin in 1855/56, with Mehmed Nuri as Mal kalemi mülazımı in Harput, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1867/68. Alongside, the lists for 1867 to 1871 give a second post, in Diyarbakır as Kalem muavini. Alongside, the lists for 1870 to 1872 give a second post, in a post with no place named as a district governor (Kaymakam). Alongside, the lists for 1871/72 give a second post, in Trabzon as Vilayet muhasebe mümeyyizi. Next came Sivas from 1872 to 1875, then a post with no place named from 1875 to 1893. The lists have no entry for 1882 to 1892. The last post was in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1893/94. Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 6 per cent of the 6,605 officials with a place of service did.

Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1856/57 to a peak of 5,000 in 1893/94, in Baghdad, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 28 years the salaries add up to 471,120 kuruş, 3.2 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1893/94.
