Life and register readings
Rıza Bey was born in Bursa in 1833/34 (AH 1249), into the İslam community. The schooling was at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Vidin in 1846/47, at about 14. The annual lists begin in 1846/47, with Rıza as Vidin Eyaleti tahrîrat kalemi; mülâzemet (mülâzemet süresi: iki sene) in Vidin. Next came Sidon (Sayda) from 1848 to 1851. For 1851 to 1853 the lists have no entry. The last entries, from 1853 to 1883, name Rıza as Anadolu ordu-yu hümâyunu tahrîrat kalemi ikinci kitâbeti, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1855 to 1865.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 3,500 kuruş a month in 1848/49, in Sidon, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. After 22 years the salary stood below the first, 1,000 kuruş against 3,500. In all, 22 years of salary come to 400,872 kuruş, 3.7 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years.
