Life and register readings
Numan Efendi was born in Çemişgezek in 1849/50 (AH 1266), into the İslam community. Work began in Istanbul in 1878, at about 28, on a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1878, with Numan as Zabıta teftiş sınıfı memuru and no place named. Alongside, the lists for 1879 to 1884 give a second post, in Istanbul as Polis Cavusu. The lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1883/84 instead of a title.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 380 kuruş a month in 1878, when 40 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1883/84.
