MUHAMMED TEVFİK EFENDİ

The life of MUHAMMED TEVFİK EFENDİ began in Kirkuk (Kerkük) in 1861/62 (AH 1278); the father's occupation was "Kerkük sancağı belediye başkâtibi". MUHAMMED TEVFİK studied at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).

Work began in Mosul (Musul) in 1877/78, at about 16, on a first salary of 270 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1877/78, with MUHAMMED TEVFİK as Meclis-i idare ve muhasebe kalemleri mülazımı in Mosul, where the entries run to 1882/83. Alongside, the lists for 1882 to 1886 give a second post, in Koy Sanjaq as Sandık emini. At the same time, from 1885 to 1888, the lists also place MUHAMMED TEVFİK in Kirkuk as Belediye meclisi kâtib-i sanisi. The lists have no entry for 1888 to 1890. Pay rose from 270 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 607.5 in 1902/03, in Kirkuk, when 70 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 22 years the salaries add up to 102,360 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
