Life and register readings
Mehmed Mahvi Efendi was born in Tokat in 1831/32 (AH 1247). Work began in Plovdiv (Filibe) in 1877/78, at about 46, on a first salary of 450 kuruş. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 46 or older. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, names Mehmed Mahvi as Berasdam? memuru, with no place. Alongside, the lists for 1877 to 1879 give a second post, in Akçakoca as Nahiye Muduru, with a rise to Nahiye Muduru. Mehmed Mahvi then moved to a post with no place named from 1879 to 1884, then Erenköy in 1884/85. The last entries, from 1886 to 1896, name Mehmed Mahvi as Nahiye Muduru, with no place.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 720 kuruş a month in 1877/78, as Nahiye Muduru in Akçakoca, when 70 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 600 kuruş. Over 16 years pay ended below where it began, 246 kuruş against 720. The final annual entry is for 1895/96.
