Life and register readings
Sâlih Efendi was born in Çemişgezek in 1846/47 (AH 1263). The schooling was at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi). At about 24, in 1871/72, Sâlih began work, on a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1871/72, with Sâlih as Rüsumat Muhafaza Müdürlüğü maiyetinde muhafaza memuru and no place named. The lists have no entry for 1878 to 1883. Sâlih then moved to Bandırma from 1883 to 1885. Alongside, the lists for 1884/85 give a second post, in Akçakoca as a customs official (Rüsumat Memuru), with a rise to Rüsumat Memuru. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1878.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to 400 in 1878, the peak, as Rüsumat Memuru, when 42 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 250 kuruş. In all, ten years of salary come to 36,000 kuruş, 69 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1884/85.
