Mahmud Es'ad Paşa was born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1837/38 (AH 1253); the father's occupation was "İlmiye mensubu". At about 13, in 1849/50, Mahmud Es'ad began work in Istanbul. The first annual entry, for 1849/50, places Mahmud Es'ad in Istanbul as Dîvân-ı Hümâyun Kalemi mülazımı. Alongside, the lists for 1854/55 give a second post, in Paris as Paris Mekteb-i Osmanî tahsili. Alongside, the lists for 1859 to 1861 give a second post, in Istanbul as Petersburg Sefareti kâtibi.
