Life and register readings
The life of ZEYNÜLABİDİN EFENDİ began in Kirkuk (Kerkük) in 1859/60 (AH 1276). ZEYNÜLABİDİN studied at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi). Work began in 1873/74, at about 14. The annual lists begin in 1873/74, with ZEYNÜLABİDİN as mülazım (muhasebe kalemi) in Kirkuk, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1879/80. ZEYNÜLABİDİN then moved to Erbil from 1880 to 1890. Alongside, the lists for 1888/89 give a second post, in Kirkuk as muhasebe varidat kâtibi. Next came Erbil and Mosul (Musul) from 1889 to 1894. For 1894 to 1907 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1893 to 1909 give a second post, in Erbil as Mal Muduru, with a rise to Mal Muduru in 1907/08. The lists give Infisal for 1889/90 instead of a title.
Pay rose from 20 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 635 in 1888/89, in Kirkuk, when 72 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 500 kuruş. Over 20 years the salaries add up to 87,180 kuruş, 88 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1908/09.
