Mustafa Şükrü Efendi

Mustafa Şükrü Efendi was born in Mecca (Mekke) in 1858/59 (AH 1275); the father's occupation was "Hicaz Vilayeti Evrak Odası başkâtibi". The schooling was at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).

At about 12, in 1870/71, Mustafa Şükrü began work. Few began so young; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known started at 12 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1870/71, names Mustafa Şükrü as a candidate official (Mülazım), with no place. For 1874 to 1876 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1884 to 1910 give a second post, in Jeddah as Cidde mukayyidi. Alongside, the lists for 1909/10 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Mülhakat kitabeti muavini. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 5 per cent of the 8,239 officials have entries spanning 41 years or more.

Pay rose from 237.5 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 700 in 1909/10, in Jeddah, when 56 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 35 years the salaries add up to 238,350 kuruş, 1.4 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1909/10.
