Life#
Born in Ağrı (Karakilise) in 1876/77 (AH 1293), Mehmet Tevfik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a finance official (maliye memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Tevfik also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 17, in 1893/94, Mehmet Tevfik began work in Eleskirt, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Mehmet Tevfik as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Diyadin, where the entries run to 1901/02. The last posts were in Kavak from 1902 to 1906 and Eleşkirt in 1906/07.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 500 kuruş a month in 1895/96, as Muhabere Memuru in Diyadin, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 12 years pay ended where it began, at 500 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
