Life and register readings
The life of Resul Efendi began in Hacıkara in 1835/36 (AH 1251). The schooling was at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi). The first salary was 75 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1858/59, with Resul as Karantinahane gardiyanı (İnfisal) and no place named, with a rise to Rusumat Muduru in 1864/65. Alongside, the lists for 1869 to 1872 give a second post, in Sulaymaniyah as Rusumat Muduru. At the same time, from 1871/72, the lists also place Resul in Baghdad (Bağdat) as Vilayet mektubî kalemi memuru. Next came Basra from 1872 to 1876. Alongside, the lists for 1875/76 give a second post, in Baghdad as Vilayet meclis-i temyiz başkâtibi. Resul then moved to Baghdad from 1882 to 1884. Alongside, the lists for 1883 to 1885 give a second post, in Mandali as Kaymakam vekili. The last entries, from 1887 to 1893, name Resul as Şehbender vekili, with no place. In place of a title the lists give Infisal for 1871/72, İstifa (resignation) for 1875/76 and Azil (dismissal) for 1892/93.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1859/60 to a peak of 1,900 in 1872/73, in Basra, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 26 years the salaries add up to 302,868 kuruş, 2.3 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1892/93.
