Life

Born in Istanbul in 1892/93 (AH 1310) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Salahaddin Efendi was the child of a tax collector (tahsildar). Salahaddin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

At about 13, in 1905/06, Salahaddin began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 75 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 13 or younger. Both annual entries, for 1907/08 and 1908/09, place Salahaddin in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 75 kuruş a month in 1907/08, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 3 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1908/09.
