Life#
Born in Aydın in 1885/86 (AH 1303) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Cemil Efendi was the child of a director (müdür). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Cemil also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Mehmet Cemil began work in Denizli in 1903/04, at about 17, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1909/10 to 1911 places Mehmet Cemil in the same post, transport official (Nakliye Memuru), in Thessaloniki (Selanik).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 500 kuruş a month in 1909/10, as Nakliye Memuru in Thessaloniki, when half the paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1911.
