Life

Haydar Efendi was born in Van in 1887/88 (AH 1305) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Haydar also wrote Arabic, Persian and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in Van in 1900/01, at about 13, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for eight years or longer. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. Every annual entry from 1908/09 to 1909/10 places Haydar in Van, the birthplace, first as Muvakkat Memuru, from 1909/10 as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).

Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1908/09 to a peak of 400 in 1909/10, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Van, when one in three paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1909/10.
