Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mustafa İhsan Efendi was the child of an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa İhsan also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1893/94, at about 17, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1893/94, to 1906/07, every annual entry places Mustafa İhsan in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to 500 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less.
