İbrahim Edip Efendi was born in Chania (Hanya) in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İbrahim Edip also wrote Greek (Rum) as well as Turkish.

İbrahim Edip began work in Derna (Derne) in 1897/98, at about 16, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1902/03 and 1903/04, place İbrahim Edip in Derna as a postal official (Posta Memuru).
