Life#
Mehmet Memduh Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1888/89, Mehmet Memduh began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1891/92, to 1893/94, every annual entry places Mehmet Memduh in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 100 in 1893/94, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 3 per cent of paid officials earned less.
