Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291), Mehmet İzzet Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1889/90, Mehmet İzzet began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Mehmet İzzet in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1893/94. Mehmet İzzet then moved to Sivas and Gaziantep (Antep) from 1894 to 1899, then back to Istanbul from 1899 to 1905. The last posts were in Beykoz from 1905 to 1907.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 400 in 1897/98, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Gaziantep, when one in three paid officials earned less. Over 15 years the salaries add up to 48,360 kuruş, 54 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
