Mustafa Sabit Efendi

Muslim (Müslüman). Born in Tuzla in 1876/77 (AH 1293). On record 1901 to 1905, 4 annual entries.

Life

Born in Tuzla in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mustafa Sabit Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Mustafa Sabit had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote Turkish and spoke Arabic.

Work began in Adana in 1893/94, at about 17, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 4 per cent worked unpaid for eight years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1901/02, with Mustafa Sabit as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Bartın. From 1902 to 1905 the annual entries place Mustafa Sabit in Samsun.

The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to 380 in 1902/03, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Samsun, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 17,280 kuruş, 74 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
