Life and register readings
Born in Safranbolu in 1861/62 (AH 1278) into the İslam community, Mehmed Sezai Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Work began in 1877/78, at about 16. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, names Mehmed Sezai as telgraf mülazımı, with no place, with a rise to Telgraf Memuru in 1884/85. The lists have no entry for 1878 to 1884. Mehmed Sezai then moved to Crete (Girit) from 1894 to 1897. The last entries, from 1898 to 1902, name Mehmed Sezai as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), with a rise to telgraf ve posta merkezi müdürü, with no place. In place of a title the lists give Infisal for 1884/85.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to a peak of 1,500 in 1899/1900, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. In all, 14 years of salary come to 109,440 kuruş, 1.6 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
