Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1888/89 (AH 1306) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İsmail Hakkı Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İsmail Hakkı also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
İsmail Hakkı began work in Istanbul in 1905/06, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 85 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1906/07 and 1907/08, place İsmail Hakkı in Istanbul, the birthplace, in the money order office (Havalename Kalemi).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 85 kuruş a month in 1906/07, in the Havalename Kalemi in Istanbul, when 2 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
