Life

Born in Istanbul in 1882/83 (AH 1300) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Nurullah Bey was the child of a director (müdür). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Nurullah also wrote French as well as Turkish.

At about 20, in 1903/04, Mehmet Nurullah began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1907/08 and 1908/09, place Mehmet Nurullah in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

Pay rose from 60 kuruş a month in 1907/08 to a peak of 120 in 1908/09, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when one in ten paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
