Life#
Born in Lapseki in 1882/83 (AH 1300), Ali Nadir Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Ali Nadir had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Lapseki in 1894/95, at about 12, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 12 or younger. Both annual entries, for 1898/99 and 1899/1900, place Ali Nadir in Bursa as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 285 kuruş a month in 1898/99, as Muhabere Memuru in Bursa, when 18 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1899/1900.
