Life#
Hasan Bedri Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hasan Bedri also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 15, in 1896/97, Hasan Bedri began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1898/99, with Hasan Bedri as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Sirkeci. The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1900 to 1904.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1898/99 to a peak of 200 in 1899/1900, as Posta Memuru in Sirkeci, when 7 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 100 kuruş. Over six years the salaries add up to 8,400 kuruş, 23 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned.
