Life#
Hasan Memduh Bey was born in Istanbul in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hasan Memduh also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
The personnel record dates the first work in the postal service (Posta) in Istanbul to 1903/04, after the first annual entry, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1902/03 to 1909/10 places Hasan Memduh in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as a letters official (Mekâtib Memuru), from 1906/07 in the Defteri Kebir Kitabeti and from 1909/10 as a fair-copy clerk (Mübeyyiz).
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to 600 in 1909/10, the peak, as Mübeyyiz in Istanbul, when 56 per cent of paid officials earned less.
