Life#
Ali Rıza Efendi was born in Avrathisar in 1866/67 (AH 1283), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali Rıza also wrote Turkish and spoke Bulgarian.
Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1880/81, at about 15, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1881/82, with Ali Rıza as a sergeant (Çavuş) in Katerini (Katerin). The last posts were in Kočani in 1882/83 and Novi Pazar (Yenipazar) in 1884/85.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1881/82, as Çavuş in Katerini, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less.
