Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1882/83 (AH 1300), Mehmet Salim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an office servant (hademe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1898/99, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1900/01 to 1904/05 places Mehmet Salim in the same post, registry clerk (Mukayyit), in Kadıköy.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to a peak of 90 in 1904/05, as Mukayyit in Kadıköy, when 1 per cent of paid officials earned less.
