Life#
Mustafa Nuri Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1882/83 (AH 1300) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mustafa Nuri began work in 1901/02, at about 18, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1902/03 to 1905/06 places Mustafa Nuri in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1904/05 as a letters official (Mekâtib Memuru).
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to a peak of 130 in 1905/06, as Mekâtib Memuru in Istanbul, when 4 per cent of paid officials earned less.
