Life#
Born in Korçë (Görice) in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Muharrem Lütfi Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Muharrem Lütfi also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 16, in 1891/92, Muharrem Lütfi began work in Korçë, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Muharrem Lütfi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Veliko Tarnovo (Tırnova). The last posts were in Ortakoy from 1898 to 1906.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 500 in 1898/99, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Ortakoy, when 48 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
