Life#
Born in Korçë (Görice) in 1876/77 (AH 1293), İbrahim Ethem Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a sergeant (çavuş). At about 12, in 1887/88, İbrahim Ethem began work in Ioannina (Yanya), with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 160 kuruş. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 12 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1889/90, with İbrahim Ethem as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Neapoli (Nasliç). İbrahim Ethem then moved to Gjirokastër (Ergiri) from 1890 to 1892, then Ioannina from 1892 to 1897. Next came Konitsa (Koniçe) from 1897 to 1900, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1897/98, then a return to Ioannina from 1900 to 1903. The last posts were in Pogoni from 1903 to 1905 and Ioannina again in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 160 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 500 in 1897/98, as 3. Müdür in Konitsa, when half the paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
