Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1877/78 (AH 1294), Mehmet Ziya Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 12, in 1888/89, Mehmet Ziya began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 12 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1889/90, places Mehmet Ziya in Üsküdar as a registry clerk (Mukayyit), where the entries run to 1894/95. Next came Çanakkale, Kastamonu and Çankırı from 1895 to 1903. The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1903 to 1906.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to 380 in 1900/01, the peak, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Çankırı, when 27 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 17 years the salaries add up to 44,400 kuruş, 44 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
