Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1879/80 (AH 1297), Hüseyin Kemaleddin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a chief clerk (başkatip). Hüseyin Kemaleddin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 20, in 1900/01, Hüseyin Kemaleddin began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1901/02, to 1905/06, every annual entry places Hüseyin Kemaleddin in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Kumkapı.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 100 kuruş a month in 1901/02, as Muhabere Memuru in Kumkapı, when 1 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 6,000 kuruş, 20 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
