Life

Born in Istanbul in 1882/83 (AH 1300), Şaban Haşmet Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a director (müdür). Şaban Haşmet had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

Work began in Karahisar in 1896/97, at about 14, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 800 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 4 per cent worked unpaid for eight years or longer. From the first annual entry, for 1904/05, to 1906/07, every annual entry places Şaban Haşmet in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Al ahdar.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 800 kuruş a month in 1904/05, as Muhabere Memuru in Al ahdar, when four in five paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 28,800 kuruş, 1.7 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
