Life#
Mehmet Raşit Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1879/80 (AH 1297), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1894/95, at about 15, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 6 per cent worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1901/02, with Mehmet Raşit as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Nablus. The last posts were in Tabuk (Tebük) and Ahtopol (Ahtabolu) from 1902 to 1906 and Smolyan (Ahiçelebi) in 1906/07.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to a peak of 800 in 1902/03, as Muhabere Memuru in Tabuk, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 500 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
