Life#
Mehmet Faik Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a senior army captain (kolağası). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1885/86, Mehmet Faik began work in Istanbul, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1891/92, with Mehmet Faik as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Kalecik. Mehmet Faik then moved to six places in 12 years, from Tsarevo (Vasilikoz) to Cimrinik, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1900/01. The last posts were in Margilic from 1904 to 1907. Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 7 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 1,000 in 1900/01, as 2. Müdür in Tabuk, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 500 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
