Life#
Mustafa Lütfi Efendi was born in Niš (Niş) in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Lütfi also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Edirne in 1892/93, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Mustafa Lütfi in Lüleburgaz as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Edirne from 1894 to 1903, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1902/03 as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur).
