Life#
Born in Niš (Niş) in 1875/76 (AH 1292), Sadik Sidki Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Sadik Sidki also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 14, in 1888/89, Sadik Sidki began work in Elbistan, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for eight years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, places Sadik Sidki in Toyran as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Thessaloniki (Selanik) and Homs (Humus) from 1897 to 1905 and Rayak in 1905/06. For 1898 to 1903 the lists have no entry.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 500 in 1905/06, as Seyyar Memur in Rayak, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
