Life#
Osman Nuri Efendi was born in Muş in 1883/84 (AH 1301) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a director (müdür). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Osman Nuri also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 16, in 1899/1900, Osman Nuri began work in Gönen, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1903/04, places Osman Nuri in Thessaloniki (Selanik) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Gönen in 1904/05 and Tirana (Tiran) in 1905/06.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to 440 in 1904/05, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Gönen, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
