Life#
Mehmet Talip Efendi was born in Arapgir in 1884/85 (AH 1302) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tax collector (tahsildar). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Galata in 1901/02, at about 16, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 145 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1901/02, to 1905/06, every annual entry places Mehmet Talip in the same post, official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru), in Galata.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to 70 in 1903/04, the peak, as Mersule Memuru in Galata, when fewer than 1 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 3,720 kuruş, 12 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
