Life#
MEHMET KENAN EFENDİ was born in Sarajevo (Saraybosna) in 1883/84 (AH 1301) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; MEHMET KENAN also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and spoke Bulgarian, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 23, in 1907/08, MEHMET KENAN began work in Sirkeci, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1907/08 and 1908/09, place MEHMET KENAN in Sirkeci as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1907/08, as Muhabere Memuru in Sirkeci, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1908/09.
