Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1880/81 (AH 1298) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmed Nuri Efendi was the child of a senior army captain (kolağası). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1895/96, Mehmed Nuri began work in Istanbul, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1901/02, places Mehmed Nuri in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official of a telegraph or post office (Merkez Memuru), where the entries run to 1904/05. The last post was in Yeniköy in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to a peak of 200 in 1905/06, as Merkez Memuru in Yeniköy, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 7,440 kuruş, 25 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
