Life

Born in Istanbul in 1880/81 (AH 1298), Süleyman Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Mabeyn-i Hümayun aşçısı". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Süleyman also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 18, in 1899/1900, Süleyman began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1901/02, to 1903/04, every annual entry places Süleyman in the same office, council clerkship (Meclis Kitabeti), in Istanbul, the birthplace.

Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to a peak of 70 in 1903/04, in the Meclis Kitabeti in Istanbul, when fewer than 1 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 2,040 kuruş, 11 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
